The department of Anatomical Pathology studies the causes and effects of diseases through microscopic observation of tissues and fluids (biopsies, surgical specimens, cytologies, etc.) in order to obtain precise diagnoses that make the most appropriate treatment possible.
This medical discipline originated in the 16th and 17th centuries, and its contribution is needed in almost all medical specialities.
The work of a pathologist is carried out in anatomical pathology departments (laboratories). The final result is a diagnostic anatomopathological report, which is generated by combining the clinical history/clinical data together with the histological/cytological examination carried out on the patients’ specimen.
The main activities of a pathologist could be divided into four main areas:
