Oral Lactose Overload Screening Test

If you are going to realize the overload test oral lactose, read carefully the following information before you visit the centre. This test allows you to assess if your body digests lactose properly. Follow the guidelines of preparation is essential to obtain reliable results and to avoid that the study be repeated.

PURPOSE

This test assesses whether the agency is able to properly digest lactose, the sugar in milk. It is used to diagnose lactose intolerance related to a lactase deficiency.

PREPARATION

Three days before the test:

  • Keep a normal physical activity.
  • Follow a diet rich in carbohydrates, at least 150gr/day. (See the example of diet in the PDF below)

Day before the test:

  • Avoid the consumption of tobacco and develops a normal activity.
  • Dinner at 8 in the evening. From that moment on, and until the end of the test the next day, it remains on an empty stomach (you can only drink water), without smoke or do any type of exercise extraordinary
  • Rest properly, sleeping a minimum of 8 hours.

Day of performing the test:

  • Get up with enough time to get to the extraction point without haste that will prevent be found in rest and physical and psychic.
  • Go on an empty stomach and without smoking between 07:30 and 08:00 hours on the day of the appointment which you have agreed with the center previously.

During the conduct of the test:

  • Avoid all physical activity and remain seated and do not smoke.
  • After the administration of glucose, you should not consume anything except water

PROCEDURE

This procedure consists in the realization of a first blood and, subsequently, the administration to the patient of a solution of 50 grams of lactose (in children is 1.75 g lactose/kg body weight, up to a maximum of 50 grams).

After the intake of the solution of lactose is made successive extractions of blood to the 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes.

If you vomit during the test, it will be interrupted and repeated another day.
