The thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the front of the neck. It produces two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones help to control energy expenditure, the body’s metabolic rate and development from childhood to old age and so affect almost every organ.

Many illnesses and conditions can affect the thyroid gland and cause a variety of problems in other areas of the body.

Goitre: Enlarged thyroid gland

Hyperthyroidism: When the thyroid gland produces more thyroid hormone than your body needs

Hypothyroidism: When the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone

Thyroid cancer

Nodules: Lumps on the thyroid gland

Thyroiditis: Swelling of the thyroid gland
